Miranda Ward is a 20-year-old junior at the University of Alabama where she is majoring in public relations with a double minor in biology and psychology. Originally from Rainsville, Ala., Ward was recently crowned Miss University of Alabama. As Miss UA, Ward promotes awareness for positive body image and eating disorders. Her platform is important because her struggle with bulimia.
What is your dream job? I want to be a surgical physician’s assistant.
What is your favorite virtue? My favorite virtue…if you mean in general, I’d say patience. As cliche as that is, patience is important when getting over an eating disorder. You can’t expect for it to all happen at once, so you must be patient with yourself and not get discouraged.
What is your favorite food? POPCORN!!!!! haha Real food, I’d say barbecue.
Who is your role model and why? Role model…my best friend Carson. She has great confidence and treats everyone kindly. She is very put-together and knows what she wants.
What is your advice to women who struggle with body image? To stop judging themselves. They have plenty of other people to do that for them. If they can stop judging themselves, then they won’t be phased by the judgements of others. Also, learn to love themselves. To love what their bodies can do. They can run, they can jump, they can smile and convey a broad range of emotion, etc.
What is your idea of happiness? Everyone finds happiness in their own way. But I think it boils right down to being comfortable in your own skin. If you aren’t comfortable in your own skin, then you are inhibited from finding happiness.
What is beauty? Beauty is like butterflies. They are all very different yet they are equally intriguing and magnificent.
What do you enjoy doing most? I enjoy watching movies with friends the most!! Any kind of movie…just not scary ones.
If not yourself, who would you like to be? I like being myself, but if I had to choose, I think I would enjoy being any of the internet pioneers. I love sharing information with people, and with internet, I could open an entire world of knowledge an opportunity to the world.
What is your biggest weakness? I am a very compassionate person, but my downfall is my patience, especially with myself.
What is your biggest strength? My biggest strength is strength itself. I am a very determined and courageous person.
What natural gift would you most like to possess? A natural gift…hmmmm…..I would love to have the supernatural power of healing. It breaks my heart to see so many hurting!
What do you most value in your friends? Honesty. Even when it hurts. I need my friends to be blunt with me, and not be afraid to tell me when I’m wrong.
